What Is Your Business Goal?

I heard a story about a man that goes to a pet
store to buy a bird for his children. There are
lots of birds there with price tags tied to their
feet. He looks at the prices and most are $5.00.
But this one bird on the end is a whopping $50.00.

He asks the clerk what is special about this bird
to which he replies that this bird can talk. So the
customer buys the bird. However, the man returns
the next day and says that the bird won’t talk.

Did he look in the mirror? I didn’t buy a mirror the
man said. So he bought a mirror. The next day
he returns, still the bird won’t talk. Did he climb
the ladder? I didn’t buy a ladder. So, he bought a ladder.

The next day he returns and angrily tells the clerk
that the bird still won’t talk. Did he swing on his swing?
The man says this is the last thing he is buying for that bird.
I bought the mirror so he would think he was not alone,
I bought the ladder so he could run up and down, and
I am buying this swing so he will feel like he is in nature.

The next morning when the man went to check on the bird,
he was lying on his back, feet sticking in the air and
before he died, the bird asked the man “didn’t they
sell birdfeed?”

Sometimes we (business owners) get lost in what we are doing and forget about what our goal is.
